Legacies, book 1 of the Shadow Grail- By Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill- Review
Spirit White has been informed she is a Legacy, fast on the heels of a car accident leaving her orphaned. What that means exactly, is beyond her caring as she travels in luxury across the country with another recently orphaned teen, Loch, to a lavish private school where she's promptly told she's got magic. But as events unfold, and Spirit begins to fit into the unusual routine at Oakhurst Academy it becomes clear that the luxuries of the school cover some pretty awful secrets, some of which will get you killed- magician or not.
Part one of a trilogy, Legacies is a building block to a greater story. I found it engrossing and cleared through it in just a few days. I did have some questions about a couple of the story lines, but I'm guessing they'll be dealt with in either Conspiracies (book 2) or the unnamed book 3 of the series.
Obviously comparisons will always be drawn to a story of a boarding school of magic and an orphan. But legacies is more like Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers series, than Harry Potter. Hints abound that Oakhurst Academy is a much darker place than it proclaims itself to be, as even large groups of friends are frowned upon, and competition is taken to new heights of unpleasantness.
I enjoyed the decided lack of romance in this story, it was refreshing and a nice change of pace for a YA book to not have the main story thread depending on a boy. In fact Spirits whole group of friends are far too busy to fawn over each other, and it's enjoyable to just have a close knit mix of friends problem solve and fight together but not spend time mooning over each other.
This series shows a lot of promise, and I'm intrigued where its going. Conspiracies, book 2, releases in July of 2011.
