Illusions, by Aprilynne Pike- Review and Author Chat Announcement!

Anybody who's read the first two books will know what I mean when I say I was insanely excited to rip into Illusions when it landed on my front step last week (sent along by the lovely folks of Harper Teen).  Book two in the series, Spells, had a big surprise at the end, and I just had to know what had happened.

I won't go into the blurb here, by book three you get the gist of what's happening- Trolls vs. Faeries, with a heavy side of love triangle.  Illusions didn't branch off in a wildly different storyline just delved deeper into the mystery of the Trolls and how they're doing all the tricky things they've been doing for the two previous books.

Despite the big end of Spells, Tamani is back, and the love triangle is as tangled as ever.  I have to say I was a bit disappointed.  I've read some pretty good author defences of the love triangle, and I get it's use in YA lit.  But although I get the point being made with them, I think they're a wildly overused tool in this genre.  I also feel like they're awfully mean, and eventually (if they don't resolve)  they go too far and they make me dislike a character.  Laurel may love both David and Tamani, but she can't tell Tamani no and then have a smooch to close the deal.  To be fair there was a bit of a resolution towards the end of the book, which redeemed Laurel enough for me to not totally detest her, but it was a close call.

The mystery of Illusions was really my favorite part.  Now all the mains are in the know, as it were, about Laurel, the Faeries and the Trolls, Aprilynne was able to dive fully into the paranormal aspects and really get dirty with it.  And boy did she ever! This led to a gigantic twist in the last couple of paragraphs leaving me hanging in the most painful way.  Honestly, I thought I was excited to get my hands on this book! The wait for next years as yet untitled release might drive me crazy now.

I tore through Illusions in just over a day, it was completely captivating, full of surprises and a lot of fun. Although the love triangle is not my thing, I still thoroughly enjoyed this penultimate story in the Wings quartet.  Illusions releases today, so make sure you don't miss out.  For those of you who are fans of the series but aren't on her latest tour schedule, make sure to check out Inkpop for Aprilynne's live chat at 5 Pm EST tomorrow (Wednesday April 4th)
