Four years ago today, I put up my first post on this blog. Nothing special, mainly because I'd just spent four days setting up the look of it, it's pages and banners etc., and now I had to review something. Cue shock and dismay at how difficult it was to put into words what I thought of the books I'd read. I had the better part of an English degree, why was this so difficult? The hubby helpfully pointed out that I was wasting a lot of breath explaining the premise of the book and not really getting into why I liked it. That hubby, always full of the best advice.
As I stare into the vast 12 months ahead of me, in 2014, I have to admit it's still hard putting my thoughts into words. Some days are harder then others, some books are harder than others, and certainly the past six months of sleep deprivation has not been helping the matter. However, this blog continues to fill me with joy as my network of book blogging friends, online and in person continues to grow and each year brings new and fun events in the book world. So don't give up on me yet, oh ye faithful readers!
Last year was, of course, dominated by our long awaited success at conceiving a baby, growing a baby and finally, giving birth to said baby. She is everything we had ever imagined and more, but instead of boring you with my mummy-ness let me just say, she has a blog. So if you would like more Sybil in your life, here she is: www.whatsybilwore.com, otherwise suffice it to say, she is the one keeping me from being as online as I used to. I have been doing pretty well at keeping up on my reading, if not my reviewing, and managed to read 94 books in 2013. I have to say I was pretty impressed by the number, even if I managed 163 the previous year sans baby. Alas, the reviewing took until October to get back online with, and then somehow dropped off the radar again briefly in the brouhaha of Christmas (*side-eyes December*), hopefully the new year will bring a bit more organization (and sleep) to my life!
Last years anniversary post summarized the past three years in posting really nicely so I won't go into that again, but this coming year if full of exciting possibilities. One of the reasons I started Sybil's blog is to test out Wordpress, and I'm loving it. I have exactly six months of mat leave left to work up the nerve to make the big move, which I'm looking forward to! Also on the agenda is Toronto's new big Book Con coming up this fall, the Toronto International Book Fair in November. Of course with this coming up there has been some talk about the Book Blogging meet up becoming more akin to New Yorks Book Blogger Con since they're in the same month and the meet up is already so carefully and meticulously arranged. I've got my fingers crossed that this will materialize into more than just rumours!
More than anything though, I'm looking forward to a year filled with interesting discussions, amusing twitter debates and embarrassing admissions to my love affair with the Darkling, with all the many wonderful bibliophiles I have met or am going to meet along the way. May we all have a fabulous year in 2014!
Oh, and make sure to eat some cake for me.
